Foundation Level Courses

Introduction to Cultural Competence in Dance:
Developing a Basic Understanding of Cultural Awareness

Course Summary:

This course provides a brief yet insightful exploration into the intersection of cultural competence and dance. Through a 20-minute pre-recorded training, participants will discover how cultural awareness plays a vital role in creating inclusive and respectful dance environments.

  • Defining Cultural Competence in Dance:

    Understand the concept of cultural competence within the context of dance education, performance, and collaboration. Explore how cultural awareness contributes to creating culturally responsive and inclusive dance practices.

    Exploring Cultural Awareness in Dance:

    Develop an understanding of cultural awareness in dance, including the importance of respecting and valuing diverse dance traditions, styles, and cultural expressions. Learn about the role of cultural sensitivity in choreography, performance, and teaching within the dance community.

This introductory course is designed for dance teachers, practitioners, and organisations aiming to refine their pedagogical approach with a focus on cultural competence. Participants learn about the intersection of dance pedagogy and cultural awareness, developing practical strategies for fostering inclusivity and enhancing collaboration skills, to navigate cultural diversity within a dance setting.

    Participants will explore the importance of incorporating cultural competence into dance education, laying the groundwork for understanding the significance of removing cultural biases and stereotypes in dance pedagogy.

    Fostering Inclusivity and Collaboration Across Cultures

    Participants will delve into techniques for promoting diversity and equity in dance training and performance. They will also refine their communication skills to effectively navigate cultural diversity.

  • Upon completion of the training, participants will develop an understanding of cultural competence. They will be equipped to identify and address cultural biases and stereotypes, fostering inclusivity and equity in dance training and performance. Additionally, participants will demonstrate enhanced communication skills to navigate cultural diversity effectively and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, promoting understanding and inclusivity within dance institutes and communities.

Intermediate Level Course

The Inside-out Approach
Moving Towards Cultural Proficiency

Course Summary:

This full day course offers foundational knowledge and practical activities for embedding cultural proficiency principles into institutional culture. Participants explore key components of cultural proficiency and its pivotal role in fostering inclusivity within institutional settings. By examining its impact on recruitment, programme development and inclusivity, participants gain insight into transformative practices. Tailored training addresses specific needs, while mechanisms for ongoing accountability and support are established.

  • Define Cultural Proficiency and its Core Elements:

    Participants will gain a clear understanding of cultural proficiency, including its core elements such as cultural awareness, knowledge, sensitivity, and competence.

    Integration of Cultural Proficiency in Programme Development:

    Participants will discuss the importance of integrating cultural proficiency in programme development for staff, educators, and independent artists, exploring practical approaches to infusing cultural diversity into dance programmes and educational training.

    Creating Inclusive and Diverse Environments

    Participants will address strategies for creating inclusive and diverse environments in dance, focusing on effective communication strategies, policy/personal practice review and community engagement.

  • Delegates will also have the opportunity to join an exclusive Zoom check-in session aimed at setting them up for success. Our skilled facilitators will guide them in establishing anti-racist groups during this session. These groups are designed to provide continuous support, enhance mutual accountability, and foster a sense of community through regular team gatherings. During these sessions, participants will discuss common challenges in implementing cultural proficiency practices in dance and explore solution-focused methods and best practices for overcoming resistance and barriers.

  • Upon completing this course, delegates will develop a thorough comprehension of cultural proficiency principles and their significance in the realm of dance education. They will acquire practical techniques and invaluable insights to adeptly navigate and honour diverse cultural backgrounds within dance settings. Advanced Level Course

Course Summary

This 6-month course guides participants in achieving cultural proficiency, emphasising language, anti-racism task forces, and root cause analysis. Participants gain deeper cultural understanding and strategies for inclusivity. Bespoke action plans and action set learning principles ensure success. The course features various creative workshops, such as Advanced Technique, Artistry Development, and Professional Development sessions.

The Mastery and Application in Dance (Advanced) course is tailored for dancers seeking to elevate their skills and achieve continuous improvement in the field of dance. Participants in the course will earn certification from the CPD Certification Service, signifying their achievement within the dance community. Through advanced modules, participants will explore intricate techniques, innovative methodologies, and professional development opportunities to enhance their performance and leadership capabilities in dance.
