Successful end of year dance showcase, 'Aspire'

THANK YOU to everyone who came down and watched our showcase, 'Aspire', and also to those who supported from afar. The evening was a sell out success and it couldn't have happened without the encouragement and generosity of our supporters.

The dancers presented a range of dance pieces in Jazz, Contemporary and Cuban dance styles, choreographed by Kamara Gray, Gerrard Martin and guest choreographer Miguel Altunaga. The evening also featured a piece choreographed by the dancers themselves.

Special guest, Namron OBE, was presented as the first patron for the company and was delighted to receive his accolade. The audience included the Worshipful the Mayor of Islington, Councillor Richard Greening and Madame Mayoress Patsy Bradbury who both gave positive feedback for the performance.

Guest Artist, Mbullelo Ndabeni performed a contemporary African piece, 'Beholder of Beauty' alongside the incredible Yamalla Drummers. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all and we look forward to putting together future performances.

Fantastic workshop with dance legend, Namron!

The dancers had the unique experience of working with legendary dance artist, Namronin an exciting contemporary dance workshop. The workshop was challenging and fast paced and thoroughly enjoyed by all (including myself!). The workshop was performed with the accompaniment of the fantastic drummer, Charles. Such amazing energy!

Since the workshop, Namron has also been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list! This is a well deserved recognition to his services to dance and I hope to be able to have him back again to work with the dancers. Thank you Namron, OBE!

Artistry Youth Dance turns one!

The Artistry Youth Dance One Year anniversary celebration!

By Taryn (company dancer)

Friday 25th April was a big day for the girls as it was a chance to show our friends and family what we had been working on over the previous months. There was a positive energy throughout the rehearsals just before the showcase but everyone was nervous. The first performance was ‘Smooth’ – the dance that was originally prepared for U.Dance. After performing the piece and hearing the good response from the audience, we all felt good about ourselves and couldn’t wait to show them what else we had! Next, we performed a mixture of exercises that Kamara had prepared for us and combined them into one piece. Once again, the response was amazing and fuelled our enthusiasm for the last and final piece – ‘Spirit’. This was everyone’s favourite piece as it was jazz and gave us a chance to incorporate our happiness and energy into one dance. We smashed the performance and the audience loved it! After, there were speeches and we had the amazing chance to meet dance legends Mr Namron & Carl Campbell and the Worship the Mayor of Islington, Councillor Barry Edwards! We took lots of pictures with them and we were all brimming with excitement to be in the same room as such important and inspirational people. The girls were all happy and glad with how the night turned out and we were all looking forward to the following Sunday to, once again, show not only our family and friends – but everyone else – just how fantastic Artistry Youth Dance is! AYD INVASION!
