Summer Dance Intensive 2017

We held our second Summer Intensive programme from Monday 14 - Friday 18 August, 2017. It was delivered on behalf of Islington Council as part of their 'Launchpad' Summer activities, and was free for young people who lived or studied in Islington, aged 16 -24 years.

The exciting programme, saw the young people have workshops in Jazz led by Kamara Gray, Hip-Hop with Yami 'Rowdy' Lofvenberg, Afro-Fusion with Sheila Attah, Contemporary Dance with Sarita Piotrowski, and Dance Business with Tomorr Kokona on behalf of One Dance UK. We even had the chance to attend the West End production of 'Dream Girls', which was a wonderful experience for all involved. A great week of dance, and we look forward to next year's event. Thanks to everyone who attended, and thank you to Islington Council and Launchpad for the opportunity to host such a great event. We'd also like to express a special thanks to City and Islington College, who provided the fantastic dance space for the Intensive.

Check out this highlights video of what took place during the week!

2014 - Year in review

We would like to thank everyone who helped make 2014 an unforgettable year for us. Here's a look back at some of our most memorable moments from the year. Enjoy!

Ballet Black Workshop Series

For the second year running Artistry Youth Dance was delighted to hold a series of workshops and Masterclasses with Ballet Black. Cassa Pancho's professional ballet company highlights and celebrates the talents of black and Asian dancers from around the world and has garnered praise from all quarters, with recent accolades including the Dance Europe Award for Outstanding Dance Company (2009). Ballet Black is now an Associate Company of the Royal Opera House. It was an amazing chance for the dancers to learn from a professional ballet company, and develop essential ballet technique and performance skills

We welcomed senior artists, choreographers and teachers from the Ballet Black team including Damien Johnson, Cira Robinson, Sayaka Ichikawa, Denzil Bailey, and Reena Bhattacharjee.

Fantastic Dance workshops

This term the dancers had a fantastic workshop with the talented Carl Campbell of CCDC7 who led a high energy Contemporary Caribbean dance masterclass. Mr Campbell has been Artistic Director of Carl Campbell Dance Company 7 since 1978 and is one of the UK’s most experienced dance specialists pioneering community based Contemporary Caribbean dance practice. For more information about Carl Campbell visit www.ccdc7.co.uk

The dancers also had a brilliant Contemporary Jazz workshop with Sara Dos Santos, Artistic Director of EIC Dance Theatre. EIC Dance Theatre is an ambitious story-telling contemporary jazz company that explores world issues that not only entertain but also provoke audiences to stand up for positive change. For more information about Sara and EIC Dance Theatre visit www.eicdancetheatre.com

We are grateful to both artists for sharing their knowledge with the dancers and look forward to working with both Carl and Sara again in the future.

Fantastic workshop with dance legend, Namron!

The dancers had the unique experience of working with legendary dance artist, Namronin an exciting contemporary dance workshop. The workshop was challenging and fast paced and thoroughly enjoyed by all (including myself!). The workshop was performed with the accompaniment of the fantastic drummer, Charles. Such amazing energy!

Since the workshop, Namron has also been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list! This is a well deserved recognition to his services to dance and I hope to be able to have him back again to work with the dancers. Thank you Namron, OBE!

Workshop with Matthew Bourne's 'New Adventures'

By Amina (company dancer)

Our dancers took part in an exciting workshop for the new theatrical dance piece based on the book Lord Of The Flies by William Golding. It was fantastically lead by two members of the Matthew Bourne dance company, 'New Adventures'. The dancers explored the use of characterisation and had a chance to interact with their fellow competitors. Furthermore they learnt an exciting and cleverly choreographed section of the dance with a stimulus of 'different sports'. Overall it was a high energy workshop which allowed the dancers to explore the more narrative side of dance.

Workshop Series with Ballet Black

The dancers had the amazing privilege of having a six-week workshop series with the award winning Ballet Black. The group had ballet technique classes and learnt repertoire from their piece, The One Played Twice  by Javier de Frutos. Classes were led by Ballet Black choreographers, teachers and dancers including Denzil Bailey, Reena Bhattacharjee and Sarah Kundi. Such a great opportunity to work with a professional dance company and I thank Ballet Black for sharing with the dancers.

Ballet Black is led by the talented Cassa Pancho, MBE, and they describe themselves as:

"a professional ballet company for international dancers of black and Asian descent. We aim to bring ballet to a more culturally diverse audience by celebrating black and Asian dancers in ballet."

I greatly support their vision and have been a Ballet Black fan for many years and so was super excited that the dancers had the chance to work with them (I even joined in a class or two!). As always, I took some pictures (just a couple!).

Welcome to our new dancers!

After a break for Summer, we held auditions for new dancers and also welcomed the return of some familiar faces. We thank all the dancers who registered and attended the auditions.

Congratulations to the successful dancers who will be joining Artistry Youth Dance!

A few photos from the day are below.
