Special Invite! Join the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater & leading vocational schools for an exclusive workshop series!

Sat 7 & Sun 8 September. 10am - 5pm

We will soon be taking our invited group of 100 young Black students to see the world renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at Sadler's Wells on the 5th, 11th, and 12th September. Thank you to everyone who registered as all tickets have been allocated! A special thank you to Sadler's Wells who kindly donated additional tickets to enable us to bring even more young people to the performances. Click here to join the waitlist.

We have organised an INCREDIBLE weekend of dance workshops on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September, including a special masterclass with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater! Rehearsal Director, Matthew Rushing, and dance artist, Jeroboam Bozeman will lead the dancers in an amazing workshop.

This exclusive 2 day weekend of dance workshops will also include workshops with leading vocational schools, colleges, and conservatoires (including Urdang Academy, London Studio Centre, Laban, Rambert School, and IRIE Dance Theatre). Participants will gain an insight into the dance industry, as well as information on various training and progression routes. The event will include an audition class, and scholarships will also be awarded at the event! The event will be hosted at the Urdang Academy. The cost to attend is £9 for one day or £15 for both days

Places are available for young people aged 12 – 19 years, of African or Caribbean descent, who have an interest in dance. All levels are welcome. Please also share the information with any young people who may be interested. 

The aim is for young black dancers to have a better knowledge of available training routes in dance and performing arts. We want to promote diversity in dance, and for more young dancers of African and Caribbean descent to be uplifted, inspired, and encouraged to pursue their dreams in dance, the Arts, or whatever career path they choose.

ALVIN AILEY AMERICAN DANCE THEATER - SUNDAY 8 SEPTEMBER
MATTHEW RUSHING

REHEARSAL DIRECTOR AND GUEST ARTIST

Matthew Rushing was born in Los Angeles, California. He began his dance training with Kashmir Blake in Inglewood, California, and later continued his training at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. He is the recipient of a Spotlight Award and a Dance Magazine Award and was named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. He was a scholarship student at The Ailey School and later became a member of Ailey II. During his career Mr. Rushing has performed as a guest artist for galas in Vail, Colorado, as well as in Austria, Canada, France, Italy, and Russia. He has performed for Presidents George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama, as well as at the 2010 White House Dance Series. During his time with the Company, he has choreographed three ballets: Acceptance In Surrender (2005), a collaboration with Hope Boykin and Abdur-Rahim Jackson; Uptown (2009), a tribute to the Harlem Renaissance; and ODETTA (2014), a celebration of “the queen of American folk music.” In 2012 he created Moan, which was set on Philadanco and premiered at The Joyce Theater. JEROBOAM BOZEMAN
 

Jeroboam Bozeman (Brooklyn, NY) began his dance training under Ruth Sistaire at the Ronald Edmonds Learning Center. He later joined Creative Outlet, and was granted full scholarships at the Joffrey Ballet School and Dance Theatre of Harlem. Mr. Bozeman is a gold-medal recipient of the NAACP ACT-SO Competition in Dance. He performed in Elton John and Tim Rice’s Broadway musical Aida (international tour in China) and was a part of Philadanco, Donald Byrd’s Spectrum Dance Theater, and Ailey II. During the fall of 2016 Mr. Bozeman performed as a guest artist with The Royal Ballet, and Dance Magazine nominated him as one of “25 to Watch” in 2018. Mr. Bozeman recently received a bachelor’s degree in psychology concentrating in industrial organization from Argosy University. Mr. Bozeman joined the Company in 2013. The Urdang Academy is a conservatoire of dance and musical theatre offering exceptional vocational training in the vibrant heart of London. Urdang educates and trains young performers from 16 and up in Musical Theatre and Dance to become strong, disciplined and confident performers.

Urdang boasts a modern outlook, dynamic atmosphere and inspiring backdrop, making the Academy an energising and contemporary place to study. We admit students based on their raw talent, believing that raw talent supercedes size, race, height, socio-economic status and ethnicity. It is this mentality that has made us the most diverse dance and musical theatre academy in the UK and has also inspired us to run a selection of short and evening courses giving everyone the chance to train and perform at their best.

IRIE! DANCE THEATRE - SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER
AFRICAN FUSION


IRIE! dance theatre will deliver a fusion class accompanied by a live drummer to introduce the BA(Hons)Diverse Dance Styles. This is a unique course presenting African, Caribbean, Contemporary and Urban dance forms equally.  The course is delivered by  IRIE! dance theatre and validated by the University of Roehampton. Founded in 1978 by Bridget Espinosa, London Studio Centre offers a BA Honours Theatre Dance degree programme specialising in classical ballet, contemporary dance, jazz dance or music theatre. The course offers training for students who are dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of the theatre.

We offer dance undergraduate programmes, as well as a Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) scheme for those aged 13-18, which all to aim to prepare you for a successful career in the world of contemporary dance.  These develop your technical expertise and expressive skills, alongside being involved in creative and collaborative projects.
